Green walls are ecologically sensible, absolute eye-catchers in urban gray and a fascinating architectural design opportunity.
- Facade greening significantly increases the quality of life in cities, because green walls contribute to a reduction in the consequences of structural compaction and climate change.
- They affect the urban microclimate. The shadow effect and evaporation that take place make these hanging gardens a natural air conditioner on hot days and a building insulation at low temperatures. In both cases, energy efficiency increases and costs are reduced.
- The dense foliage of a green wall captures harmful ingredients in the air and binds dust. Additional plus points lie in their cleaning function of the air through the binding of CO2 and the production of oxygen.
- Facade greening provides a natural habitat for animals in the city.

Facade greening & natural cooling
In the case of a green building wall, the stored water in the plants begins to evaporate due to the sun’s rays, is released to the environment, and this results in immediate cooling.
Currently, around 850 square meters of green space are planned on around 50 houses in Vienna. The facade greening is to run from the Gudrunstraße on the Absberggasse and over the source road. At best, this approximately 850 square meters of green space will replace about 30 air conditioners.
